What no one tells parents about the dating app HookedUp
Today we’re getting the inside scoop on HookedUp as we begin Day 3 of our dating apps for parents of teens series.
By now you might be saying, “I don’t want to discuss any of these apps with my teens.” I get it. It’s hard reading about many of these apps. But, I want you to consider something. According to a study by PEW Research, online dating has roughly tripled from 10% in 2013 to 27% today. Now, before you click off this page thinking 27% isn’t a significant number, I want to point out that’s 1 in 4 young adults. Did you catch that….1 out of every 4!
How many friends do your teens have? How old are your teens?
Look at the percentage of growth. I think it’s clear we need to be talking to our teens about dating apps.
So, let’s get started with our dating app for Day 3.
Age: 13 & Up
In App Purchases: No
Contains Ads: Yes
HookedUp is a free app where users can connect, meet, and date people with similar interests. They do allow for teen usage. HookedUp segregates users in two buckets: 13-17 years and 18+. According to HookedUp, users won’t be able to view the profiles across the age buckets.
Users can swipe through profiles for other users. Profiles shown are based on your settings filters, number of mutual interests, and distance. When shown a profile you have 3 options: Reject, Show Later, or Connect.
There are a couple of options for connecting with people: InstaConnect and Ask for a Coffee. Users can use one or the other at any given time. InstaConnect allows users to connect with people in and around their location as soon as a request is sent. With InstaConnect, you’ll only be shown profiles which also have InstaConnect enabled. Requests are not sent if you Show Later or Reject the profile. If there is a profile you really want to meet, the Ask For A Coffee option is the best way to go. Users may only request 2 coffee meets per week.
Users have the option to Show Only Facebook Friends while in InstaConnect mode.
Profiles have the option of going through a verification process. This process includes uploading your ID proof along with other necessary details.
What Teens Say
This is a new app. Teens gravitate to what’s new. Especially when an app is created for and marketed directly to them. And, that’s what HookedUp has done
What Parents Need to Know
As of February 2017, HookedUp is not included in the iOS market. But, it does have a number of downloads in the Android marketplace. It’s marketed to teens 13-17 years old. So, it’s definitely worth noting, even if it doesn’t gain enough traction to make it long term. What’s most notable is that their Terms & Conditions really have no verbiage stating they ban porn. Nor do they offer encouragement for behavior. In fact, there’s really not much to their terms, which is a bit alarming given the fact they’ve opened this app up to kids 13 years of age.
HookedUp is available for both Android devices.
