What Parents Need to Know About Live.Me

What Parents Need to Know About Live.MeWhat Parents Need to Know About Live.Me

Live.Me is a live broadcasting app popular with teens. Live.Me states in their description the purpose of the app is to “Find your true self and show off your talents.” And that’s exactly what users can do. Using Live.Me, users can create a broadcast and grow a fan base of followers and new friends. They can meet other broadcasters. They can even date, play games, and send virtual gifts to other Live.Me users.

WHAT IS LIVE.ME?

Live.Me is a live broadcasting social media platform. It’s available as an app in the iTunes and Google Play store. But, users can also create a user account online.

WHAT IS THE AGE REQUIREMENT FOR LIVE.ME?

According to their terms, Live.Me is for 18 years and up only. In fact, their terms are pretty clear that users under 18 years of age are not allowed.

However, they have a Parent Guide that seems to suggest teens under 18 years of age are permitted to set up an account with parental permission.

WHAT DO I DO IF MY TEEN UNDER 17 OPENS A LIVE.ME ACCOUNT WITHOUT MY PERMISSION?

Contact the safety team at Live.Me to report the account and request they remove it.

WHAT TYPE OF CONTENT CAN USERS EXPECT TO SEE ON LIVE.ME?

Both the Google Play store and iTunes have rated Live.Me 17+ for the following content:

  • Infrequent/Mild Profanity or Crude Humor
  • Infrequent/Mild Alcohol, Tobacco, or Drug Use or References
  • Violence
  • Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes

I found instances of all of these while I checked out Live.Me. And I didn’t have to dig to find it. Most of it was easily accessible. Most of the content I saw was people broadcasting from their bedroom or living room singing to the radio or waiting for people to join the broadcast. In other words, they didn’t have content to share. They were hanging out waiting for other people to join their broadcast and hang out with them.

CAN YOU BLOCK OR REPORT INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT AND USERS?

When broadcasting, you can block a user. You can also give some permissions to block people for your account while you broadcast. But, as a general watcher you can’t block a user. And, there isn’t an easy way to report a user for inappropriate content either. To report, you need to grab a screenshot and email it to Safety@liveme.com

ARE IN-APP PURCHASES AVAILABLE?

Yes

WHY DO TEENS WANT TO DOWNLOAD LIVE.ME?

Live.Me is a place for teens to connect with other teens. Facebook and Instagram are now places where their parents hang out. So, teens are looking for a place where they can broadcast live with kids their own age.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CONCERNS TO DISCUSS WITH TEENS ABOUT LIVE.ME?

Content! There is very little content that adds value to your day. The videos freeze constantly. And most broadcasters don’t seem to broadcast with actual content planned. So, Live.Me can be a big time waster.

There’s media that teaches, encourages, and uplifts. Then there is media that is nothing more than mindless fluff. Live.Me falls into the mindless fluff category. And, it’s likely your teen will run into content that contains profanity, crude humor, and plenty of sexual videos.

SHOULD I LET MY TEEN DOWNLOAD LIVE.ME?

I try to avoid giving parents a hard yes or no when it comes to apps. Apps are tools. And, I realize every family is different. However, I will offer these final thoughts.

Live.Me is a live broadcasting platform. We are familiar with the term live streaming. Apps like Facebook and Instagram all have a live streaming option. Live broadcasting is almost the same. In fact, the technology is pretty much the same. But in live broadcasting the user is actively trying to connect with those watching.

When a user live streams, they are more of a host. There is less focus on connecting with those viewing. Live broadcasting is less content and more reach and connecting with those watching. This can be a very tricky and slippery slope for teens. I believe it’s also why many of the live broadcasting platforms tend to be missing more solid valuable content.

We need to be teaching our teens to use technology wisely. To select sources that help them do a task more effectively. Or, that help them gather information or offer solid content. I encourage teens to steer clear of apps and websites where there is no clear purpose or value added to their lives. It’s just too easy to get sucked in and realize you’ve lost hours of precious time you can never get back.

Thanks a bunch. Didn’t even know about this platform yet but it’s good to know BEFORE they ask to download it. 🙂

I’m glad it was helpful. It’s challenging to stay ahead of them asking isn’t it?!
